About the book

Hotel California
The Lovely Face

Hotel California: The Lovely Face is a work of independent literary and cultural criticism — a close, original reading of the words of the most analysed song in popular music, fifty years on. It is, as the cover says, the words nobody read.

For the ones who listen. Not to the music — to the words. For the outsiders, the misfits, and the ones who never belonged anywhere long enough to stop noticing.

“My only regret would be having to explain it in detail to you, which would defeat the purpose of using literary devices in songwriting.” — Don Henley
“Bill reads the lyrics the way you read evidence. Not like a fan. Like an investigator. Brilliant.” — Neil Taylor

An independent work

This book is an independent work of literary and cultural criticism. It is not endorsed by, affiliated with, or authorised by the Eagles, their management, or their record label. The phrase “Hotel California” is used solely for the purpose of critical analysis, commentary, and nominative fair use. Brief quotations from song lyrics and published interviews are used under fair-use provisions for the purpose of critical commentary.
